Pakojärjestelmän refers to the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine. Its primary function is to safely and efficiently remove combustion byproducts from the engine and direct them away from the vehicle's occupants. The system is comprised of several key components, each serving a distinct purpose.

The exhaust manifold, attached directly to the engine cylinders, collects the hot exhaust gases as they are expelled. From there, the gases typically flow into a catalytic converter, a device designed to reduce harmful emissions by converting toxic pollutants like carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides into less harmful substances such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrogen.

Following the catalytic converter, the exhaust gases pass through a muffler, which is crucial for reducing the noise generated by the combustion process. The muffler uses a series of chambers and baffles to absorb and dissipate sound waves. Finally, the system culminates in an exhaust pipe that directs the gases out from under the vehicle.

A properly functioning pakojärjestelmän is vital for engine performance, fuel efficiency, and environmental protection. It also plays a significant role in occupant comfort by preventing exhaust fumes from entering the cabin. Issues with the exhaust system can lead to reduced power, increased fuel consumption, unpleasant noise, and potentially dangerous exposure to toxic gases.
