Paki

Paki is a shortened form of the word Pakistani. In many contexts it has functioned as an ethnonym, but since the late 20th century it has largely been used as a pejorative slur by some speakers toward people of Pakistani descent. Its impact depends on usage, setting, and intent, but it is widely regarded as offensive when used to insult, demean, or harass someone.

Originating in English-speaking contexts during or after the period of British rule in the Indian subcontinent, the term gained prominence in parts of Europe and North America as a label for Pakistanis and those perceived as Pakistani. In some eras and places, the word appeared in journalism and popular culture; however, it also became associated with discriminatory attitudes and violence. In the United Kingdom, for example, the label was linked to anti-Pakistani sentiment and acts described in media and law enforcement as “paki-bashing” during the late 20th century.

Today, paki is widely regarded as an offensive slur in many countries. Its use by outsiders or in professional, educational, or public settings is typically condemned. Some individuals within the Pakistani diaspora have attempted to reclaim the term in limited, self-identified or artistic contexts, but such reclamation is controversial and not universally accepted. Given its potential to offend, many institutions advise against its use and prefer neutral descriptors such as Pakistani or person of Pakistani descent.

Legal and social responses to the term vary by jurisdiction. In several countries, harassment, hate speech, or discrimination laws address the use of ethnic slurs, especially where language contributes to a hostile environment or target-based intimidation.
