Paintera
Paintera is an open-source software tool designed for the visualization and annotation of large-scale volumetric image data. Developed by the Janelia Research Campus, Paintera is particularly useful in the field of neuroscience for the reconstruction of neural circuits from electron microscopy (EM) data. The software supports multi-resolution data, allowing users to work with high-resolution images without the computational burden of loading the entire dataset into memory. Paintera's user interface is designed to be intuitive, featuring a 3D viewer that enables users to navigate and annotate their data in three dimensions. The tool also includes features for collaborative annotation, allowing multiple users to work on the same dataset simultaneously. Paintera is written in Java and is available under the GNU General Public License, making it freely accessible to researchers and developers. The software has been widely adopted in the neuroscience community for its efficiency and effectiveness in handling large-scale image data.
