Paineensäätimen, also known as a pressure regulator, is a valve that controls, reduces, and maintains an output pressure of a fluid. This fluid can be a liquid or a gas. The primary function of a pressure regulator is to take a high, potentially fluctuating inlet pressure and deliver a steady, lower outlet pressure to a downstream system. This is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of many industrial, commercial, and domestic applications.

Pressure regulators work by balancing the force from a high inlet pressure against a spring force. When the downstream pressure increases, it pushes on a diaphragm, which in turn closes the valve, reducing the flow and thus the pressure. Conversely, if the downstream pressure drops, the spring force overcomes the diaphragm force, opening the valve and allowing more fluid to flow, increasing the pressure.

Common applications for pressure regulators include reducing the high pressure from a compressed gas cylinder to a usable level for welding or medical equipment, controlling water pressure in a building's plumbing system to prevent damage to fixtures, and maintaining consistent pressure in pneumatic systems for automation. They are also used in fuel systems of vehicles and in various chemical processing plants. The design and materials of a pressure regulator are chosen based on the specific fluid being controlled, the required pressure range, and the operating environment.
