Paikkatarttumaa is a term used in ecology and geography to describe the tendency of organisms to stay in, settle in, or repeatedly return to a particular location. The concept encompasses site fidelity, philopatry, and related patterns of spatial attachment across different scales, from microhabitats to broader territories. In Finnish usage, the term combines paikka (place) and tarttua (to cling or adhere), reflecting the idea of attachment to a location.

The phenomenon is observed across taxa, including birds that return to specific nesting sites, fish that prefer natal or feeding grounds, mammals with stable home ranges, plants occupying enduring microhabitats, and even microbial communities anchored to particular substrates. Paikkatarttumaa arises from a balance of benefits—such as predictable resources, safety, and reproductive opportunities—and costs, including limited dispersal, increased competition, or exposure to local hazards.

Researchers measure paikkatarttumaa using movement tracking (GPS or radio telemetry), mark-recapture studies, occupancy analyses, and, in some cases, isotopic or genetic analyses to infer site use and fidelity.
