Paberitootmisel, or paper manufacturing, refers to the industrial process of producing paper from raw materials, primarily cellulose fibers derived from wood, recycled paper, or other plant-based sources. The process traditionally begins with the pulping stage, where raw materials are broken down into a slurry of fibers. Mechanical, chemical, or semi-chemical methods are employed to separate fibers and remove non-cellulosic components such as lignin.

The pulp is then cleaned and refined to achieve the desired fiber characteristics. It is diluted with water to form a thin suspension, known as the furnish, which is then fed onto a continuous moving conveyor called a wire or mesh. As the water drains through the mesh, the fibers form a wet sheet. This sheet is pressed between rollers to remove excess moisture and then dried using heat or hot air in a drying section.

Additional finishing steps may include calendering, to smooth and glaze the surface, or coating, to improve printability and appearance. The final product is wound onto reels or cut into sheets for packaging and distribution.

Paper manufacturing is an energy-intensive process that requires significant water and electricity resources. Modern practices emphasize sustainability through innovations in recycling, water conservation, and the use of environmentally friendly chemicals. Recycling of paper reduces reliance on virgin fiber sources and minimizes waste, contributing to resource conservation.
