PVBZwischenschicht

PVBZwischenschicht, short for polyvinyl butyral interlayer, is a clear plastic film used to bond glass panes in laminated glazing. It is positioned between glass sheets during the lamination process and, after heating and pressure, forms a single, cohesive safety unit. The interlayer helps hold glass fragments in place during breakage, reducing the risk of injury and improving impact resistance. Additional benefits often include UV light filtration and some degree of sound insulation.

Material and variants

The interlayer consists of polyvinyl butyral, a thermoplastic resin that can be formulated with plasticizers to adjust flexibility and aging behavior. PVB films are available in various thicknesses, typically from around 0.38 mm to 1.1 mm per sheet, and can be clear or tinted. Special formulations exist to enhance acoustic performance or UV stabilization. In high-security or specialized applications, multiple interlayers or alternative materials may be used in combination with PVB.

Applications and standards

PVBZwischenschicht is widely used in architectural laminated glass for facades, skylights, and interior partitions, as well as in automotive windshields and other safety glazing. It is designed to meet safety and performance standards that specify resistance to breakage, integrity after impact, and UV protection. Standards vary by region and application, such as safety glass regulations and building codes.

Durability and end-of-life

PVB interlayers provide good aging performance under typical indoor and outdoor conditions, though prolonged exposure to heat, moisture, or harsh solvents can affect adhesion. Laminated glass containing PVB can often be recycled or processed to separate the glass from the interlayer, with disposal or recycling options depending on local facilities.
