PTFEkatted

PTFEkatted is a term used in industrial and manufacturing contexts to describe a surface or component that has been coated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), commonly known as Teflon. The PTFE film imparts low friction, non-stick release, chemical inertness, and improved wear resistance, helping to reduce sticking and simplify cleaning.

Coatings are applied using various processes, including spray or dip coating of PTFE emulsions, or the application and sintering of PTFE powders. After application, a heat cure or sintering step fuses the coating to the substrate. Typical coating thickness ranges from about 1 to 20 micrometers, with thicker films used for enhanced wear or chemical resistance. Substrates commonly coated include metals such as steel and aluminum, as well as certain ceramics and composites. Surface preparation, including degreasing and roughening, is important to promote adhesion.

Applications for PTFEkatted parts span cookware and food processing equipment, bearings, bushings, seals, valves, and equipment in chemical or pharmaceutical industries. PTFE coatings help reduce friction, allow easier release of viscous materials, and resist many solvents and acids. They are valued where cleanability and corrosion resistance are important, provided the substrate and operating conditions suit the coating.

Limitations include potential wear under high-velocity or abrasive service, dependence on proper surface preparation for adhesion, and temperature constraints. Continuous service temperatures for PTFE coatings are typically around 250°C, with higher temperatures risking degradation or fumes if overheating occurs. PTFEkatted coatings may require touch-ups or reapplication over time as wear or damage occurs. Safety considerations include avoiding overheating during use, as PTFE decomposition can release fumes.
