PSMA4 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the PSMA4 gene. This gene is a member of the proteasome subunit alpha gene family, with the gene product being a component of the 20S proteasome complex. The complex is involved in the degradation of ubiquitinated proteins. PSMA4 and other subunits of the proteasome complex are produced by a subset of select cell types in embryogenesis, making this protein the subject of research in the field of developmental biology.

Research suggests that PSMA4 plays a role in inducing apoptosis in certain cell types. Studies have indicated that this is mediated through the activation of caspase-8, suggesting a potential pathway for future investigation. Other studies have linked PSMA4 alterations to a particular type of disease, the causes of which have yet to be fully understood.

The human PSMA4 gene has a total of three exons, which are involved in its overall expression. The gene is located on chromosome 3 and has been associated with certain conditions that include disorder in the clearance of excess ubiquitinated proteins in the body.

Studies have identified the association of mutations with certain diseases, studying how PSMA4 alterations are impacted by aberrations in the activity of the 20S proteasome complex. Consequently, it is probable that PSMA4 influences how our cells recycle their proteins, which may lead to new research objectives in cell development.
