Processor architecture IA-64, also known as Intel Itanium Architecture, is a 64-bit instruction set architecture (ISA) developed primarily by Intel Corporation. Introduced in the late 1990s, IA-64 was designed to deliver high performance for enterprise-level computing and server applications. It is distinct from other 64-bit architectures like x86-64, primarily due to its implementation of a new architecture based on Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC).

EPIC allows the processor to execute multiple instructions simultaneously by explicitly indicating instruction dependencies and parallelism in the instruction set. This design strategy aims to improve instruction throughput and optimize performance for high-end computing tasks. The IA-64 architecture features a large register file, advanced out-of-order execution, and a deep pipeline, enabling efficient processing of complex instructions.

The architecture supports a large address space, memory management features, and enhanced security capabilities. Its instruction set includes both legacy x86 instructions through an optional compatibility mode and native IA-64 instructions, designed for high-performance computing workloads.

Despite its technical advantages, IA-64 faced limited adoption outside specific enterprise segments, primarily due to software compatibility issues and the dominance of x86-64 architecture. Intel officially discontinued the Itanium processor line in the early 2020s, shifting focus toward other architecture platforms.

Overall, IA-64 represented an ambitious attempt to overhaul processor architecture for demanding computational environments. While it was not widely adopted in mainstream consumer markets, it contributed to advancements in processor design and emphasized the importance of explicit parallelism in high-performance computing systems.
