PRKepiLASIK

PRKepiLASIK, also known as Epi-LASIK, is an advanced laser vision correction procedure that combines aspects of both PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) and LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis). Unlike traditional LASIK, which creates a corneal flap, PRKepiLASIK involves separating the corneal epithelium, the outermost layer of the cornea, using a specialized device. This epithelial layer is then folded back, similar to a flap, to expose the underlying corneal tissue.

Once the epithelium is moved aside, an excimer laser is used to precisely reshape the cornea, correcting refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. After the laser treatment, the epithelial layer is carefully repositioned over the treated area. This layer will then heal naturally over the subsequent days.

The primary advantage of PRKepiLASIK over LASIK is the elimination of a true corneal flap, reducing the risk of flap-related complications. Compared to PRK, which removes the epithelium entirely, PRKepiLASIK preserves this layer, which can potentially lead to a slightly faster visual recovery and reduced discomfort for some patients. However, the healing process for the epithelium still takes time, and patients typically experience a period of blurred vision and light sensitivity before achieving their final visual outcome. It is a distinct surgical option for refractive error correction.
