PREMISi

PREMISi is a fictional open-standard framework intended to support long-term digital preservation, provenance, and risk assessment across heterogeneous repository environments. Derived from preservation metadata concepts, PREMISi extends the core PREMIS model with enhanced event tracking, impact indicators, and interoperability profiles to enable consistent recording of preservation actions and their results.

Origins and organization: Conceptualized by a hypothetical consortium of libraries, archives, research centers, and software vendors in the late 2010s, PREMISi is described as being maintained by the PREMISi Consortium. The specification outlines conformance profiles, reference implementations, and guidance for independent repositories seeking interoperable preservation metadata.

Model and components: The core model centers on Asset (the digital object or dataset), Event (actions such as creation, migration, format conversion, or validation), Agent (person or organization responsible), Representation (bitstreams or file forms), and Provenance (the history and chain of custody). Relationships, roles, timestamps, and versioning are captured to form auditable preservation histories. Metadata may be expressed in JSON-LD, RDF, or XML, with optional domain extensions to cover disciplines such as geospatial data or multimedia. PREMISi promotes interoperability via stable identifiers and profiles that align with other metadata standards.

Applications and governance: PREMISi supports archival repositories, institutional libraries, and data centers needing risk assessment, incident reporting, and migration planning. Adoption examples include national libraries and university archives within pilot programs. Governance is collaborative, with ongoing revisions, public comment periods, and community-driven testing to ensure compatibility with existing PREMIS-based workflows.
