PNNL

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a United States Department of Energy national laboratory operated by Battelle Memorial Institute. It is located in Richland, Washington, on the Hanford Site. The laboratory was established in 1965 as the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) and was renamed Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in 1995.

PNNL conducts research across energy, environmental science, and national security. Its programs address energy systems and storage, grid modernization, advanced materials, chemical and biological sciences, and nuclear nonproliferation. The laboratory also hosts the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a DOE user facility that supports molecular-level research on environmental processes and molecular analytics.

PNNL collaborates with universities, industry, and other government entities and receives funding from the Department of Energy and other sponsors. Through its research, the lab aims to contribute to energy efficiency, sustainable energy deployment, environmental stewardship, and public safety. Its work supports federal missions in national security, energy resilience, and scientific innovation.

PNNL operates on the Hanford site and employs thousands of staff and researchers in multiple scientific disciplines, including computing, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering.
