PMT1

PMT1 refers to a gene encoding a protein O-mannosyltransferase 1, an enzyme that initiates O-mannosylation of polypeptides in the endoplasmic reticulum. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, PMT1 is one subunit of the protein O-mannosyltransferase (PMT) complex, typically associated with PMT2. In animals, the functional counterpart is commonly called POMT1 (protein O-mannosyltransferase 1), reflecting its conserved role across eukaryotes.

Functionally, PMT1 catalyzes the transfer of a mannose residue from dolichol-phosphate-mannose to serine or threonine residues on nascent proteins, creating O-linked mannose glycosylations. This modification influences protein folding, stability, trafficking, and activity.
