PHAbased
PHAbased is a term used to describe materials or products based on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a family of biopolymers produced by bacteria as intracellular energy storage. PHAs can be synthesized industrially by fermentation of sugars, plant oils, or other carbon sources, and then recovered as a thermoplastic polymer. The term is not standardized and may be used variably, but in many contexts it denotes PHAs or PHA-containing formulations.
PHAs are composed of hydroxyalkanoate monomers; the most common homopolymer is poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), and copolymers like
Applications include packaging and disposable products, agricultural films, medical devices, sutures, and tissue engineering scaffolds. The
