PDFportfolios

A PDF portfolio is a type of PDF file that aggregates multiple files of various formats into a single, packaged container. It provides an interactive interface that allows users to browse, preview, search, and access each embedded item while preserving the original formats of the included files.

Creation and structure: PDF portfolios are typically created within Adobe Acrobat by selecting a command such as Create PDF Portfolio and adding files or folders. The items can be organized into groups, folders, or categories, and a cover page or theme can be applied. The portfolio may include a dynamic view, thumbnail previews, and an integrated index for navigation.

Contents and behavior: Each embedded file remains in its native format and can be opened with its associated application from within Acrobat or Reader, depending on the viewer. The container can be password-protected and access can be restricted; permissions can be set for the portfolio and for embedded items. Search features may index filenames, metadata, and content where possible, enabling cross-file discovery.

Limitations: Not all PDF viewers support portfolio navigation equally, and some mobile apps or older readers may display only the embedded file list or fail to render certain features. Large portfolios can be cumbersome to share or download, and editing embedded items typically requires the original source files.
