One common classification is based on the order of the highest derivative. First-order PDEs involve only the first partial derivatives of the unknown function. Another important classification distinguishes between linear and nonlinear PDEs. In a linear PDE, the unknown function and its partial derivatives appear only to the first power and are not multiplied together. Nonlinear PDEs, on the other hand, involve terms where the unknown function or its derivatives are raised to powers greater than one or are multiplied. Nonlinear PDEs are generally much harder to solve analytically.

PDEs are also categorized by their principal part. For second-order linear PDEs in two variables, this classification leads to three main types: elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic. Elliptic PDEs, such as Laplace's equation, typically describe steady-state phenomena. Parabolic PDEs, like the heat equation, are often used to model diffusion processes. Hyperbolic PDEs, exemplified by the wave equation, are used to describe wave propagation. This classification helps in determining boundary conditions and the nature of solutions.
