Pústulas

Pústulas are small, pus-filled lesions on the skin. They are typically raised and appear as white or yellowish bumps. Pústulas can occur as a symptom of various skin conditions, including acne, folliculitis, and some forms of dermatitis.

The formation of a pústula is often a sign of the body's immune response to an infection or inflammation. Bacteria, such as Propionibacterium acnes in acne, can contribute to the development of pus. The pus itself is a collection of dead white blood cells, bacteria, and debris.

While pústulas are commonly associated with acne, they can manifest in other areas of the body. Folliculitis, an inflammation of the hair follicles, can also lead to the appearance of pústulas. Certain fungal or parasitic infections can also cause these lesions.

Treatment for pústulas depends on the underlying cause. For acne, topical or oral medications may be prescribed. If a pústula is caused by an infection, antibiotics or antifungal agents might be necessary. It is generally advised not to squeeze or pop pústulas, as this can worsen inflammation, spread infection, and lead to scarring.
