Púðurdufthúðun, also known as powder coating, is a dry finishing process that uses an electrostatic charge to apply a dry powder to a substrate. The charged powder particles are then attracted to the grounded substrate. Once the part is coated, it is moved into a curing oven where the powder melts, flows, and fuses into a smooth, durable, and attractive finish. This process is commonly used on metals like steel, aluminum, and iron, but can also be applied to other materials.

The powder itself is typically a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment, resin, and additives. These components are melted together, cooled, and then ground into a fine powder. The type of resin used determines the properties of the final coating, with options like epoxy, polyester, or hybrid formulations offering various levels of chemical resistance, UV stability, flexibility, and hardness.

Powder coating offers several advantages over traditional liquid coatings. It is environmentally friendly as it contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It also produces a thicker and more durable coating than many liquid paints, providing excellent resistance to chipping, scratching, and fading. The process is efficient, with overspray powder often being reclaimable and reused, reducing waste. Applications are widespread, including automotive parts, appliances, architectural elements, furniture, and industrial equipment.
