Põllumajandusühistud

Põllumajandusühistud, or agricultural cooperatives, are voluntary associations of farmers who have joined together to achieve common economic goals. These cooperatives are formed to address challenges that individual farmers may face, such as limited bargaining power, access to markets, or the cost of specialized equipment. By pooling their resources and efforts, members of a cooperative can achieve economies of scale and improve their overall profitability and sustainability.

The primary functions of agricultural cooperatives vary widely but often include joint purchasing of agricultural inputs like seeds, fertilizers, and animal feed, which can lead to lower costs through bulk discounts. They also frequently engage in joint marketing of members' produce, allowing them to access wider markets, negotiate better prices, and meet larger order volumes than they could individually. Some cooperatives provide shared services, such as processing, storage, transportation, or even machinery rental, making these resources accessible to all members.

The legal framework for agricultural cooperatives in Estonia is outlined in the Cooperative Act. Membership is typically open to farmers who meet certain criteria, and decisions are usually made on a democratic basis, often with one member, one vote. The purpose of a cooperative is to benefit its members, and any profits generated are usually distributed among them according to their patronage or contributions. These organizations play a significant role in the Estonian agricultural sector by strengthening the competitiveness and resilience of its farmers.
