Päikesepurk

Päikesepurk, often translated as "sun jar" or "sun catcher," is a simple craft object popular in Estonia and other Nordic countries. Its primary purpose is to capture and amplify sunlight, creating a visually appealing display of light and color, particularly during sunny days.

Traditionally, a päikesepurk is made from a glass jar, often a repurposed food jar. The interior of the jar is decorated with various materials that refract or reflect light. Common elements include small glass beads, broken pieces of colored glass, mirrors, or even small shiny objects. These are typically affixed to the inside walls of the jar using a strong adhesive. Once the adhesive is dry, the jar is often filled with a clear liquid, such as water, or sometimes left empty.

When placed in direct sunlight, the light passes through the glass jar and interacts with the reflective and refractive elements inside. This creates a shimmering effect, with colorful patterns and beams of light dancing on nearby surfaces. The effect is most pronounced on bright, sunny days. Päikesepurks are often used as decorative items in gardens, on windowsills, or as simple, handmade gifts. They are a charming way to bring a bit of sparkle and light into everyday spaces.
