Päevitamisel refers to the act of sunbathing, a common recreational activity. It involves exposing the skin to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. This process can lead to a suntan, which is the skin's response to UV exposure, typically involving an increase in melanin production. While often associated with leisure and achieving a desired skin tone, prolonged or unprotected sunbathing carries significant health risks.

The primary benefit often sought from päevitamisel is cosmetic, resulting in tanned skin. However, the sun's UV rays are also responsible for the synthesis of vitamin D in the body, which is essential for bone health and other bodily functions. Short, moderate exposure to sunlight can contribute to vitamin D levels.

Despite the potential for vitamin D production, the risks associated with päevitamisel are considerable. Excessive exposure to UV radiation can cause sunburn, characterized by redness, pain, and blistering of the skin. Over time, cumulative UV damage can lead to premature skin aging, including wrinkles, age spots, and a leathery texture. Most importantly, prolonged and repeated sun exposure is a major risk factor for developing skin cancer, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Therefore, health organizations recommend practicing sun safety, such as using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding peak sun hours, even when engaging in päevitamisel.
