Ozonafbraak

Ozonafbraak refers to the depletion of the ozone layer, a region in Earth's stratosphere that contains a high concentration of ozone (O3). This layer plays a crucial role in absorbing most of the Sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation, protecting life on Earth from its harmful effects.

The primary cause of ozone depletion is the release of certain man-made chemicals into the atmosphere, most notably chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halons. These substances, once widely used in refrigerants, aerosols, and fire extinguishers, are very stable in the lower atmosphere. However, when they rise to the stratosphere, they are broken down by UV radiation, releasing chlorine and bromine atoms. These atoms then act as catalysts, triggering chemical reactions that destroy ozone molecules. A single chlorine or bromine atom can destroy thousands of ozone molecules before it is eventually removed from the stratosphere.

The consequences of ozone depletion include an increase in the amount of harmful UV-B radiation reaching the Earth's surface. This can lead to a rise in skin cancer and cataracts in humans, as well as damage to crops and marine ecosystems. The most well-known manifestation of ozone depletion is the "ozone hole," a region of significantly thinned ozone over Antarctica that forms each spring.

International efforts, particularly the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, have been successful in phasing out the production and consumption of most ozone-depleting substances. As a result, the ozone layer is showing signs of recovery, though it will take many decades for it to return to pre-depletion levels. Continuous monitoring and adherence to international agreements remain important to ensure the full recovery of this vital atmospheric shield.
