Oxigénigényes

Oxigénigényes is a Hungarian term that translates to "oxygen-demanding" or "requiring oxygen" in English. It is most commonly used in biology and environmental science to describe organisms or processes that necessitate the presence of oxygen for their survival or function.

In the context of biology, aerobic organisms are oxigénigényes. These are living beings, such as most animals and plants, that rely on cellular respiration, a process that utilizes oxygen to produce energy. Anaerobic organisms, on the other hand, do not require oxygen and may even be harmed by its presence.

Environmentally, the term oxigénigényes is frequently applied to water bodies. High oxygen demand in water, often measured as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) or Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), indicates the presence of organic pollutants. Microorganisms in the water break down these pollutants, consuming dissolved oxygen in the process. If the oxygen consumption rate is high, it can lead to oxygen depletion, harming aquatic life. Therefore, a low oxigénigény in a water sample is generally indicative of good water quality, while a high oxigénigény suggests pollution.
