Oversvämningar, or floods, are a natural phenomenon that occurs when water covers land that is normally dry. They can happen in various ways and at different scales. River floods are the most common type, occurring when rivers overflow their banks due to heavy rainfall, rapid snowmelt, or dam failures. Coastal floods are caused by storm surges, high tides, or tsunamis, which push seawater inland. Flash floods are rapid and often destructive floods that occur with little warning, usually in low-lying areas or canyons after intense rainfall. Inland flooding can also occur due to prolonged rainfall saturating the ground, preventing water from draining away.

The impact of floods can be severe, ranging from property damage and agricultural losses to displacement of populations and loss of life. Infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and power grids can be severely damaged, disrupting essential services. Floods can also pose health risks due to contaminated water and the spread of waterborne diseases.

Preventative measures and mitigation strategies are crucial in managing flood risks.
