Overskuddsstrømmen

Overskuddsstrømmen, meaning surplus electricity in Norwegian, refers to the situation where the electricity generation on the grid exceeds the demand at a given time. This can occur due to various factors, including high renewable energy production, such as wind and solar, particularly during periods of low consumption.

When overskuddsstrømmen is present, the excess electricity needs to be managed to maintain grid stability. In countries with robust electricity grids and storage capabilities, this surplus can be stored for later use, exported to neighboring countries, or used to charge electric vehicles and other flexible loads. The development of battery storage technology and smart grid solutions plays a crucial role in effectively handling these periods of surplus.

Conversely, a prolonged period of overskuddsstrømmen can lead to challenges for electricity producers, as they may have to curtail production or even pay to offload excess power.
