Oversigter are concise summaries that present the essential content of a document, report, project, dataset, or topic, providing readers with a quick orientation without requiring examination of the full material. The term comes from Danish oversigt, meaning overview, and the plural oversigter is widely used in Danish professional and academic writing.

In use, oversigter appear in public administration, business, research, and education. They are commonly included at the beginning of reports, within meeting packets, or as stand-alone summaries to communicate scope, status, or findings to diverse audiences.

A typical oversigt is structured around a few core elements: a purpose statement, the scope or boundaries of the material, the main elements or findings, timelines or milestones, data sources or methods where relevant, and key conclusions or next steps. They are intended to be neutral, concise, and easy to scan.

Variants include executive overviews, data overviews, project overviews, and program overviews. An executive overview targets senior readers and emphasizes outcomes and decisions; a data overview highlights sources, quality, and key statistics; a project or program overview outlines objectives, scope, milestones, and budget.

Creation and use: identify the audience and purpose, select the most relevant information, organize it logically, and present it clearly. While useful for orientation, oversigter are not substitutes for the full documents, and readers may still need access to detailed sections for deeper understanding.
