Oversetters is the plural of oversetter, a term used in Norwegian and Danish to denote a translator. An oversetter converts written text from a source language into a target language, aiming to preserve meaning, tone, style, and register.

They may work across genres, including literary, technical, legal, and commercial texts. Unlike interpreters, who render spoken language in real time, oversetters work with written material and must consider audience, context, and cultural references.

Typical qualifications include fluency in both languages, strong writing ability, and knowledge of terminology. Many oversetters hold degrees in translation or language studies. They commonly use computer-assisted translation tools, glossaries, and translation memories to ensure consistency and efficiency, with self- and peer-editing as standard steps.

Work arrangements vary from freelance contracting to in-house positions in publishing houses, government agencies, or translation firms. Rates are often per word or per project, and professional standards are maintained by national associations in Norway and Denmark.

Outside Scandinavian contexts, the term is rarely used; English speakers typically say translator. The oversetter role reflects a specialized linguistic profession that combines language knowledge, research, and writing to bridge communication across cultures.
