Overlooks

Overlooks are designated vantage points that provide outward views of landscapes, towns, coastlines, or other scenery. They are typically located along roads, trails, or parkways and may include parking areas, paved or boardwalk surfaces, railings, and interpretive signage. Scenic overlooks are common in national and state parks, mountain passes, and coastal areas, where the geography offers expansive panoramas. They range from simple pull-off spaces to purpose-built viewpoints with raised platforms or terraces.

In architecture and landscape design, an overlook can refer to a raised vantage point such as a balcony, gallery, or terrace that frames sightlines to the surrounding space. In such contexts, overlooks are used to create visual connection between interior areas and exterior views, or to provide sheltered vantage points within a courtyard or building.

As a verb, to overlook has several meanings. It can mean to fail to notice or consider something, as in an oversight. It can also mean to supervise, be in charge of, or oversee a project or area.
