Overdamming

Overdamming is a term used in hydrology and civil engineering to describe the excessive or unnecessary construction of dams on a river or watercourse. This can lead to a range of environmental, social, and economic consequences.

The primary environmental impacts of overdamming include significant alterations to river flow regimes, disruption of fish migration and spawning patterns, changes in sediment transport leading to downstream erosion or delta formation, and the inundation of valuable ecosystems and habitats. Reservoirs created by dams can also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions through the decomposition of organic matter.

Socially, overdamming can result in the displacement of communities, loss of cultural heritage sites, and conflicts over water resource allocation. Economically, while dams can provide benefits like hydropower, irrigation, and flood control, excessive damming can lead to diminishing returns and increased maintenance costs.
