Ottamassa is a traditional Indian sweet dish originating from the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. The name "ottamassa" is derived from the Tamil words "ottam," meaning excellent or superior, and "massa," which refers to a type of dough or batter. This dessert is particularly popular during festive occasions, religious ceremonies, and family gatherings.

The preparation of ottamassa involves a fermented batter made primarily from rice flour, jaggery (a traditional unrefined sugar), and sometimes coconut milk or water. The batter is allowed to ferment naturally for several hours or even overnight, which gives it a slightly tangy flavor and a soft, spongy texture. The fermentation process also aids in digestion, making it a healthier alternative to many other sweets.
