Otsonia

Otsonia is a genus of small, herbaceous plants belonging to the family Apiaceae. These plants are native to the mountainous regions of the Himalayas, specifically found in Nepal, India, and Bhutan. Otsonia species are typically characterized by their delicate, compound leaves and small, white or pale pink flowers arranged in umbels. They often grow in damp, shaded areas, such as forest floors and alongside streams, at high altitudes.

The genus Otsonia was first described by the botanist Hiroo Ohba in 1984. While there are a few recognized species within the genus, Otsonia nepalensis is the most widely known. These plants are not commonly cultivated and are primarily of interest to botanists and researchers studying Himalayan flora. Their ecological role is likely that of a minor component in the understory vegetation of alpine meadows and forests, contributing to biodiversity. Due to their restricted geographic distribution and specific habitat requirements, Otsonia species may be vulnerable to environmental changes. Further research is ongoing to fully understand their taxonomy, distribution, and conservation status.
