Ostredok

Ostredok is a mountain peak in Slovakia. It lies in the Western Carpathians in the central part of the country, forming part of the ridges that run through the Veľká Fatra region. The summit is typically cited as around 1,300–1,400 meters above sea level.

Geography and geology: The peak sits on sedimentary rocks characteristic of the Carpathians. The terrain includes forested slopes, rocky outcrops, and alpine meadows near the crest. The landscape bears the marks of glacial erosion and long-term weathering.

Ecology: Lower slopes are covered by mixed coniferous and deciduous forests, giving way to open pastures at higher elevations. The area provides habitat for species such as red deer, chamois, and several bird communities; flora includes alpine grasses and specialized plants.

Access and recreation: Ostredok is a popular destination for hikers and day-trippers. It is reachable by marked trails from nearby villages, with the ascent varying from moderate to challenging depending on the chosen route. Weather can change rapidly, and footing can be uneven, especially on scree.

Conservation: The Ostredok area is within Slovakia’s system of protected areas, with regulations designed to safeguard habitats, wildlife, and traditional alpine-use practices. Visitors are encouraged to stay on marked paths and follow local guidelines.
