Osteocitetët

Osteocitetët are mature bone cells, differentiated from osteoblasts, that reside within lacunae, small cavities within the bone matrix. They are the most abundant cell type in mature bone tissue and play a crucial role in its maintenance and remodeling. Osteocitetët are interconnected through a network of fine channels called canaliculi, which allow for communication and nutrient exchange between cells. This interconnectedness is vital for sensing mechanical stress on the bone.

These cells are characterized by their star-like shape and long cytoplasmic processes that extend through the canaliculi. Osteocitetët are responsible for maintaining the bone matrix and are involved in calcium homeostasis by releasing calcium ions into the bloodstream when needed. They also participate in the process of bone remodeling, a continuous cycle of bone resorption and formation, by signaling to osteoblasts and osteoclasts. While osteoblasts are responsible for synthesizing new bone matrix, osteocitetët are the keepers of the mature bone, ensuring its structural integrity and responding to environmental cues. Their long lifespan and central role make them indispensable for healthy bone function.
