OsCl

OsCl refers to osmium chloride, a class of chemical compounds containing osmium and chlorine. The most common and stable form is osmium(VIII) chloride, OsCl, which is highly unstable and not typically isolated. More commonly encountered are osmium(IV) chloride, OsCl4, and osmium(II) chloride, OsCl2.

Osmium(IV) chloride, OsCl4, is a dark red solid that is soluble in nonpolar solvents. It can be prepared by the direct reaction of osmium metal with chlorine gas at elevated temperatures. Osmium(II) chloride, OsCl2, exists in several forms, including a green anhydrous form and various hydrated species. It is generally less reactive than OsCl4. OsCl2 can be synthesized by the reduction of higher osmium chlorides. It also finds applications in coordination chemistry and catalysis.
