Oryw

Oryw is a city-state and municipal region on the western coast of the fictional continent of Lysara. It covers about 110 square kilometers and has a population of roughly 68,000 as of 2023. The city sits at the head of a natural harbor on the Gulf of Néra, with the Oryw River running through the old town.

History: Oryw began as a trading settlement in the early medieval period, grew into a free city following the Treaty of Velyra in 1287, and developed into a shipbuilding and commerce hub during the Early Modern era. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it expanded its port facilities and integrated into regional trade networks, while preserving a historic core.

Economy: The economy is diversified: maritime trade and port services, shipyards, fishing, logistics, and light manufacturing. Tourism focuses on the preserved old town, waterfront promenades, and the Marehold Fortress.

Governance: Oryw operates as a constitutional city-state with a unicameral City Council consisting of 22 members. The mayor acts as chief executive and is elected for a four-year term. The council oversees planning, finance, infrastructure, and culture.

Demographics and culture: The majority population is Orywan, with minority communities from Lysara and neighboring regions. Official languages are Orywan and Lysaran. The annual Mare Festival celebrates maritime heritage.

Transport and infrastructure: The port of Maregate handles commercial traffic and ferries; the city is connected by a coastal rail line and a network of bus routes.

Notable features: Oryw’s old town walls, the 14th-century Cathedral of St. Liora, and the Marehold Fortress overlook the harbor, reflecting the city’s long-standing maritime role.
