Orthoquinodimethane

Orthoquinodimethane, also known as 1,2-dimethylbenzenequinone, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C9H8O2. It is a cyclohexadienone derivative that contains two identical carbonyl groups in ortho position on a phenyl ring. This compound is an unsaturated carbonyl compound, characterized by its ability to readily undergo electrophilic substitution reactions and contribute to the resonance stabilization of aromatic systems.

Orthoquinodimethane was first synthesized in the early 20th century and was the subject of extensive studies regarding its chemical reactivity. Its molecular structure features an allene unit embedded within the phenyl ring, which acts as an internal dipolar π system. This dissymphony resonance system exhibits unique electronic properties compared to regular aromatic compounds, where the conjugated ring leads to reduced volatility and the ability to continue conjugation to adjacent groups.

Research on orthoquinodimethane has contributed to the understanding of electrophilic aromatic substitution mechanisms and conjugated reaction pathways. The highly reactive nature of this compound can only be stabilized through the deposition of metal atoms on its surface, thus preventing fission-based reactions. However, reactive problems have prevented orthoquinodimethane from being used for extensive industrial manufacturing.

As a remedial process, deposition technology using graphitic in molecular assembly (GRA) to control chemical progression in lattice decoupling structures may provide viable methodology.
