Ordsammansättningar, a Swedish linguistic term, refers to the process of forming new words by combining two or more existing words. This is a highly productive method for word creation in the Swedish language, contributing to its rich vocabulary. The resulting compound word, known as a sammansättning, typically takes on a new meaning that is a combination of the meanings of its constituent parts, though semantic shifts can occur.

The structure of a Swedish ordsammansättning usually follows a clear pattern. The first word, often called the determinative element, modifies or specifies the meaning of the second word, the head element. For example, in the word "solros" (sunflower), "sol" (sun) modifies "ros" (rose), indicating a type of rose that follows the sun. The stress in a compound word is typically placed on the first element.

Grammatically, ordsammansättningar are treated as single words. The grammatical gender and number of the compound word are determined by the head element. For instance, if the head element is neuter, the compound word will be neuter. Plurals are formed on the head element, not on the initial element.

This phenomenon is not unique to Swedish and is found in many other languages, including German and Dutch. However, Swedish exhibits a particularly strong tendency towards compounding, leading to very long words at times, such as "nordvästpassadvind" (northwest trade wind).
