Oppimisarkkitehtuuri, literally “learning architecture,” is a conceptual framework used in educational theory and practice to design, analyse, and optimise learning environments and processes. The term emerged in the early 2000s within Finnish education research, influenced by constructivist and systems approaches that emphasise the interrelatedness of physical, digital, social, and organisational components of learning.

At its core, a learning architecture identifies several key layers. The foundation layer describes the institutional context, including policies, governance, and resource allocation. The second layer comprises the learning spaces – physical classrooms, community hubs, and virtual platforms – and the technologies that enable interaction. The third layer focuses on learning pathways, curriculum design, and pedagogy, enabling learners to progress through coherent sequences. Finally, the evaluation layer captures feedback mechanisms, assessment practices, and data analytics that inform continuous improvement.
