Medical use of opioid-containing products typically centers on relief of moderate to severe pain, perioperative analgesia, and, in some cases, anesthesia. Some indications also include cough suppression (in limited formulations) or, in specific programs, treatment of opioid dependence through supervised medications like methadone or buprenorphine. Dosing and pharmacokinetics vary across substances and formulations.

Risks associated with opioid-containing medications include common opioid side effects such as constipation, nausea, sedation, and respiratory depression. There is potential for tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal with long-term use, as well as the risk of misuse or diversion. Interactions with other sedatives, alcohol, or other liver-toxic ingredients (in acetaminophen-containing products) can increase harm.

Regulatory frameworks vary by country, but these medicines are generally subject to controlled-substance scheduling, prescription requirements, and safety labeling. Some jurisdictions require monitoring programs, risk assessment, and access to antagonist medications like naloxone for overdose protection. Public health considerations emphasize balancing analgesic benefits with risks of misuse, addiction, and overdose, alongside education and stewardship efforts.
