OpenPGP-compatible refers to software, libraries, or tools that implement the OpenPGP standard, as defined by RFC 4880 and its extensions, in order to ensure interoperable cryptographic operations. When something is OpenPGP-compatible, it can process data and keys in the OpenPGP format and interact with other OpenPGP implementations without proprietary formats.

OpenPGP uses a packet-based data model that supports public-key cryptography, symmetric encryption, digital signatures, compression, and optional integrity protection. A compatible tool can perform key generation, import and export of OpenPGP keys, encryption for one or more recipients, decryption, signing, and verification, as well as handling revocation certificates and key trust or validity information. It may also support ASCII armor for readable key and message transport.

Interoperability is a practical hallmark of OpenPGP-compatible software. It enables secure email, file encryption, and digital signing across different platforms and applications. Common OpenPGP-compatible implementations include widely used tools and libraries such as GnuPG, OpenPGP.js, and PGPy, as well as various mail clients and plug-ins that implement the standard.

Limitations and considerations include the fact that some implementations may support only a subset of algorithms or features, or may lag in adopting new extensions to the standard. To maximize compatibility, software should adhere to the core RFC 4880 specification, use standard algorithm sets, and maintain up-to-date security updates. OpenPGP compatibility remains central to cross-platform secure communication and data protection.
