Onesitemsstates is a term used in computer science to describe a compact encoding scheme for representing the states of a collection of items within a single data structure. In this approach, each item corresponds to a position in a state vector and the value stored there indicates the current state of that item. The set of possible states is finite and fixed for all items, though implementations may allow per-item variations in some extensions.

Two common encodings are used with onesitemsstates. Bitvector encodings represent binary states by a single bit per item, allowing fast bulk checks and updates through bitwise operations. Fixed-width encodings allocate a small, constant number of bits per item to encode multi-state items, which supports more than two states while preserving predictable memory usage. In both cases the entire collection’s state can be serialized into a contiguous sequence of bits or integers, facilitating storage and transmission.

Advantages of onesitemsstates include a compact memory footprint, fast bulk operations, and straightforward serialization. It enables quick queries such as “how many items are in state X?” and efficient updates like toggling a subset of items to a new state. Limitations arise from its rigidity: changing the number of items or the number of possible states often requires re-encoding the entire structure, and readability can suffer compared with explicit per-item state fields.
