Onderwaternetwerken refer to the systems and technologies used to establish communication and data transfer between devices submerged in water or across aquatic environments. These networks are crucial for a variety of applications, including scientific research, environmental monitoring, underwater exploration, and military operations. Unlike terrestrial networks that utilize radio waves or cables, underwater networks face unique challenges due to the properties of water, which significantly attenuate radio frequency signals.

The primary methods for underwater communication include acoustic modems and optical communication. Acoustic modems transmit data using sound waves, similar to how sonar works. This method is reliable over long distances but has a low bandwidth, meaning data transfer rates are slow. Optical communication, on the other hand, uses light waves to transmit data. This offers higher bandwidth and faster speeds but is limited to shorter ranges and requires clear water conditions.

Underwater networks can be deployed in various configurations. Static networks consist of fixed nodes, such as sensors or buoys, while mobile networks involve vehicles like autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) or remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) that can move and establish connections dynamically. The development of underwater networks is an ongoing area of research, aiming to improve range, speed, reliability, and energy efficiency to better support the increasing demand for underwater data collection and control.
