Omkodet

Omkodet is a Norwegian term used to describe the process of re-encoding data, or transcoding, by applying a different encoding scheme, codec, or parameters to an existing data stream or file.

In media processing, omkoding is common when adapting files for compatibility, distribution, or storage efficiency. Video and audio streams are often transcoded to different codecs, bitrates, resolutions, or container formats. This may be done to reduce file size, enable playback on specific devices, or meet streaming platform requirements.

The typical workflow involves decoding the source data to an intermediate representation and then encoding it again with the chosen settings. Because many codecs are lossy, recoding can introduce quality loss, especially when multiple generations are produced. Artifacts such as blurring, ringing, or compression noise may appear and accumulate over successive transcodes.

Common considerations include the chosen codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, color space, audio sample rate, and container format. Transcoding requires processing power and time and may raise licensing or compatibility concerns for certain codecs or formats.
