Determining the useful life of an asset is an estimation process. Accountants and asset managers consider historical data, manufacturer specifications, industry standards, and the expected intensity of use. For example, a company vehicle's useful life might be estimated in years or in mileage, whichever is expected to be reached first. Similarly, a piece of machinery might have a useful life based on its expected operating hours.

The useful life is a key component in calculating depreciation expense. Depreciation systematically reduces the carrying value of an asset on a company's balance sheet over its useful life. This aligns the expense of using the asset with the revenue it helps generate. Once an asset reaches the end of its useful life, it is typically retired from service, sold for salvage value, or disposed of.
