Olympiada
Olympiada refers to the period of four years between two Olympic Games. The first Olympiad began in 776 BC with the first Olympic Games held at Olympia in Greece. This ancient tradition continued for centuries. The modern Olympic Games, revived by Pierre de Coubertin, began in 1896 in Athens, Greece. Each Olympiad is numbered consecutively from the ancient games. For example, the XXXII Olympiad was the period leading up to the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, which were held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The term Olympiad can also be used more broadly to refer to the Olympic Games themselves, though technically it denotes the interval. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) oversees the organization and scheduling of the Olympic Games and the associated Olympiads.
