Olpidium
Olpidium is a genus of biflagellate chytrid fungi belonging to the order Olpidiales. These obligate endoparasites are commonly found in soil and aquatic environments, where they infect a wide range of hosts, including algae, oomycetes, protozoa, and nematodes. Their life cycle typically involves a zoospore stage that motilely seeks out and penetrates a host cell. Within the host, the zoospore develops into a vegetative thallus, which eventually matures into a resting spore. This resting spore is released from the host and can survive unfavorable conditions before germinating to produce new zoospores.
Several species of Olpidium are of significant interest due to their potential as vectors for plant viruses.
