Olenevad

Olenevad is a fictional geographical region and political entity created for use in speculative fiction and tabletop role-playing contexts. It is depicted as a temperate highland valley located in the eastern foothills of the Orinian Range, bounded by the Serene Mountains to the north and the Leris River to the south. The name Olenevad is constructed from in-world linguistic roots, with -vad meaning valley in the local language family.

Geography and climate: The valley covers roughly 1,200 square kilometers and is framed by limestone plateaus and forested ridges. Its climate is moderated by elevation, producing cool summers and mild winters with reliable winter rainfall. Fertile alluvial soils support agriculture, while irrigation from the Leris sustains orchards, vineyards, and grain fields. Settlements cluster around the central basin and river terraces.

History and governance: In-universe sources place the first settlements among the Nevai around 900 BCE. A city-state named Velari emerged in the central basin by the 4th century CE and later formed a loose federation known as the Olenevad Compact by 1520. In contemporary depictions, Olenevad is governed by the Olenevad Council, with Velari serving as the administrative capital and twenty districts under its jurisdiction.

Economy and culture: The economy blends agriculture (olives, grapes, cereals), forestry, crafts, and tourism. Cultural life centers on seasonal markets, music, and festivals that celebrate harvests and local artisanal traditions. Architecture combines timber-framed houses with stone courtyards and courtyards, reflecting a harmony between built heritage and landscape.

Notable features: Landmarks include the Serpent Gorge, the Golden Terrace, and the Leris Valley Archaeological Site. Protected areas such as the Sakar Forest Reserve are prominent in maps and lore within Olenevad.
