Olenditest

Olenditest is a hypothetical mineral used in geoscience and materials science as a teaching aid and modeling placeholder. The name derives from the fictional Olendi region and the standard mineral suffix -ite. It is not known to occur in the natural world and has no confirmed specimens.

In imagined form, olenditest is a layered silicate-like mineral with a sheeted structure consisting of tetrahedral and octahedral layers. The hypothetical formula is written as (M)2(Si4O10)(OH)2, where M represents alkali or alkaline-earth cations. This structure yields a tendency for sheet silicate behavior and potential for two-dimensional stacking.

Projected physical properties for the hypothetical mineral include a hardness on the Mohs scale of about 4 to 6, a measured density in the range 2.8 to 3.3 g/cm3, and a vitreous to pearly luster. Cleavage is envisaged as perfect or near-perfect along basal planes, with anisotropic cleavage.

Formation is imagined to occur in low-to-moderate temperature hydrothermal environments, in weathering zones or altered igneous rocks, under conditions that favor sheet silicate assembly. In the laboratory, olenditest can be synthesized via hydrothermal methods combining aluminosilicate precursors with alkali flux at moderate temperatures.
