Oksidaatioaste, also known as oxidation number or oxidation state, is a measure of the degree of oxidation of an atom in a chemical compound. It indicates the number of electrons that an atom has gained, lost, or appears to have gained or lost in a compound. The concept of oxidation state is crucial in understanding and predicting chemical reactions, particularly redox reactions, where electrons are transferred between species.

The oxidation state of an element in its uncombined form is zero. For example, the oxidation state of an isolated hydrogen atom (H) or an isolated oxygen atom (O) is zero. In compounds, the oxidation state of an element is determined by assigning electrons to the more electronegative element in a bond. For instance, in water (H2O), each hydrogen atom has an oxidation state of +1, and the oxygen atom has an oxidation state of -2.

The sum of the oxidation states of all atoms in a neutral compound is zero, and in a polyatomic ion, the sum of the oxidation states is equal to the charge of the ion. For example, in the sulfate ion (SO4^2-), the oxidation state of sulfur is +6, and each oxygen atom has an oxidation state of -2. The sum of these oxidation states is -2, which matches the charge of the ion.
